London TravelWatch, the independent watchdog for the travelling public in and around the capital, has announced that Michael Roberts will retire from his position as Chief Executive in Easter 2027.
Michael joined London TravelWatch in January 2023. Under his leadership, the organisation has campaigned for better bus, Tube and rail services, called for multi-year funding for Transport for London, and worked hard to make sure that transport operators and policing authorities do more to tackle hate crime and unwanted behaviour on the network. The organisation was also instrumental in overturning deeply unpopular plans to close rail ticket offices and to withdraw the Day Travelcard.
Michael said: “It has been a privilege to work with such dedicated people in the team, the London Assembly and the world of transport on the things which matter to the daily life of millions of Londoners. Our work as a watchdog is, of course, never done, and I wish London TravelWatch every success in the years ahead.”
Tricia Hayes, Chair of London TravelWatch, said: “I’ve been so lucky to have the chance to work with Michael over the last two and a half years. He has been a fantastic advocate for London’s travelling public and should be rightly proud of everything that has been achieved by London TravelWatch under his leadership. We will miss him hugely but wish him nothing but joy for the future.”
The process of recruiting Michael’s successor will begin later in the autumn.
