Responding to the Prime Minister’s announcement that people will no longer be required to wear face coverings or social distance on public transport, London TravelWatch Director, Emma Gibson said:

“It is important to be mindful that while some people can’t wait to tear off their face masks, others say that they will voluntarily carry on wearing theirs, even after they don’t have to. Last week our research showed that half are still saying that they won’t use public transport unless social distancing is in place, while 58% say they won’t use public transport unless passengers are required to wear a face covering.

So as we approach 19 July, it is really important that passengers are respectful and considerate towards each other, because many people are still very nervous about travelling. Train companies and TfL can help by providing the best possible, localised travel information about the busyness of their train or bus, so that people can make informed choices about when they feel most comfortable to travel.”
