Today London TravelWatch, in a joint letter with the business representative group London First, gave a warning to policy makers that premature cuts to services could cause permanent, long-term damage to London’s transport network. In the letter the two organisations argue that the consequences of this for London’s transport system could be that more people switch from public transport to using private cars which in turn would lead to increased congestion and a further deterioration to London’s air quality. The letter, which was also co-signed by the Campaign for Better Transport and Unite, recommends that the review into bus service demand that was a condition set by government as part of Transport for London’s latest finance deal be pushed back to at least the Autumn. Doing so would allow more time for passengers to return to the network and give a more accurate picture of the true level of demand. You can read the letter in full here.
