London Bus Alliance

The London Bus Alliance was set up in 2021 to help make the case for the importance of the bus to Londoners and reverse the decline in bus ridership.

Our research has consistently found that the bus is a vital lifeline to many Londoners – and more of them use the bus than any other type of public transport. It is especially important to those on lower incomes, women, children, disabled people and ethnic minority groups in the capital. And one bus can take up to 75 cars off the road so it’s great for the environment too.

But, as you can see in our recent report, there are issues with London’s buses. They are too slow – average bus speeds range from 8.1mph in inner London to 10.3mph in outer London, and are lower in every borough compared with ten years ago. There is often a lack of communication both on buses when they are disrupted, and at stops if people do not have access to the internet. And people are concerned about anti-social behaviour on buses.

But we believe things can change to make buses better for everyone. To help make this change, the London Bus Alliance has called for the bus to be:

More reliable – the bus to be given more priority on London’s roads

More affordable – fare levels to be kept as low as possible

More connected – the bus to receive fair funding to help deliver improvements to buses and prevent cuts to services

How does the Alliance work?

The London Bus Alliance meets on a regular basis. Members will not need to agree with every decision the Alliance makes, nor join a campaign on a specific matter if they feel it is one that they cannot support or is not applicable to their organisation.
