Oxford Street pedestrianisation

Find out more about upcoming changes to the famous shopping street

It was confirmed in February 2026 that pedestrianisation of part of Oxford Street will go ahead. While we are broadly in support of this initiative, we do hope to see more clarity around changes to bus stops, new cycle routes, and lighting and seating at relocated bus stops to ensure they feel safe and inclusive.

Oxford Street has the highest footfall of any street in the UK, and is believed to be the busiest shopping street in the whole of Europe. With an estimated 500,000 people visiting Oxford Street each day, and over 150,000 people entering and exiting via Oxford Circus tube station, plans to pedestrianise the famous street have been ongoing for many years but had previously met various obstacles.

The new plans will see Oxford Street West (between Orchard Street/Selfridges and Great Portland Street/IKEA) going completely traffic-free by the end of summer 2026.

We will be watching progress with great interest and hope to see the development of a safe, less crowded and pleasant space for pedestrians.
