Watchdog calls South Western Railway to account

13 March 2019

At the next London TravelWatch meeting on 19 March, members will call on the Managing Director of South Western Railway, Andy Mellors, to explain the operator’s ongoing poor performance and plans to improve the service.

South Western Railway’s cancelled and significant lateness score for the third quarter of 2018/19 was the franchise’s worst for over 10 years while just 47.3% of the operator’s trains reached their destination within one minute of their scheduled arrival time, 7.69% lower than the previous quarter.

Alan Benson, Chair of London TravelWatch’s Policy Committee commented: 'Passengers travelling on South Western Railway services have had a rough time over the past 18 months and as a regular user I have witnessed the disruption first hand. Our latest National Rail performance report shows that performance dipped again during the third quarter of 2018/19 and we are seeing reports of falling standards. Next week we will be trying to get to the bottom of the reasons for this poor performance and finding out about plans to turn the situation around. User satisfaction with the service is currently the second lowest in our area – passengers expect and deserve much better.'

The Board will also receive the latest performance reports; on National Rail, Transport for London and casework.

The meeting will take place at Europoint, 5-11 Lavington Street, London, SE1 0NZ. It will begin at 10.15am and end at approximately 1pm. The session with Andy Mellors begins at 11.55am. The agenda and papers are available in the meetings section.  You can follow live tweets from the meeting – we will be using #LtwPolicy.
