Fares unfairness has to stop now warns passenger watchdog after January fares increases are confirmed

30 November 2018

Responding to today’s National Rail rail fares announcement, London TravelWatch Chief Executive, Janet Cooke commented: 'The confirmation that fares will rise by an average of 3.1% at a time of poor and declining performance*, particularly in London and the commuter belt is not good news for passengers. This will also mean that the gap between the cheapest and most expensive fares that we have been highlighting to the industry in recent years** will widen still further. This once again shows the urgent need to simplify fares.'

  • **Earlier this year London TravelWatch highlighted the fact that some commuters are paying up to £35 a week more than others for the same length of journey and this will only get more unfair with this fresh increase. The worst example of this is the difference between a weekly season ticket from Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire (21 miles) which costs £92.90 and the same ticket from Oxted in Surrey (20 miles) which costs £57.10.
