London TravelWatch welcomes the reopening of Blackfriars station

London TravelWatch has welcomed the reopening of the Blackfriars London Underground Station, three years after it was shut for major redevelopment work.

Work to redevelop the station took 10 weeks longer than expected but the passenger watchdog believes the new station was certainly worth waiting for, with increased capacity, step free access to all platforms including the Underground, and a new ticket hall.

Sharon Grant, Chair, London TravelWatch commented that: ‘The redevelopment of Blackfriars Station means that passengers will now benefit from excellent interchange between the Thameslink route, the District and Circle lines and the ability to walk across the Thames to the Southbank entrance.’

Sharon Grant continued:  ‘A transport network for all’ is one of our 10 transport users’ priorities for the 2012-16 mayoral term which we are encouraging the prospective Mayoral candidates to adopt so it is particularly pleasing that disabled passengers will benefit from easy access to the platforms at the redeveloped Blackfriars station.’

TfL and Network Rail put in place a successful passenger information programme throughout the redevelopment process which meant that London TravelWatch received a minimal number of appeal complaints about the closures and rebuild process.
