London TravelWatch on future of Sussex railways on 22/09/2009
London TravelWatch has responded to Network Rail’s consultation on the Sussex Route Utilisation Strategy.
The Route Utilisation Strategy sets out the strategic vision for the future of the network serving parts of Sussex, Surrey and London.
London TravelWatch's suggestions and recommendations in response to the strategy include starting (immediately) a review on re-casting the timetable, which has grown piecemeal over the last 25 years, leading to inefficient use of capacity; re-assessing the validity of Gatwick Express remaining a non-stop service between Gatwick and London; bringing into service 48 carriages, which are unused for most of the commuter peak period, and giving consideration to modifying current operating methods, allowing more trains to run.
